An island behind a gate

Gateholm is named for a tidal island off the Pembrokeshire coast — a place you can walk to, that still keeps the sea between itself and everything else. That's the idea in one picture: your everyday apps, connected to everything you do, with a boundary around what's yours.

What this is

The apps everyone lives in — passwords, notes, files, feeds, reading lists, budgets — are all available as excellent open-source software you can run yourself. Almost nobody does, because running servers is a job. Gateholm does that job: we host the open-source versions of those apps for you, keep them updated, and back them up every night. You get the privacy of self-hosting without becoming a sysadmin.

What we believe

• Open source only. Every app we host is open-source software with a standard export format. You can inspect what runs your data, and you can leave with it — the same guides that help you switch in work in reverse.
• Honest encryption claims. We say "end-to-end encrypted" only where it is literally true, and describe exactly how everything else is protected — no vaguer than the facts. The precise per-app breakdown is in the privacy policy — no asterisks.
• The bill is the business model. Your subscription is our entire income. No ads, no trackers, no data sales, no investors pushing for either. What you pay is what keeps the servers on — that alignment is the product.
• Real support. Small on purpose: when you send a ticket, a person who can actually fix the problem reads it.

Where your data lives

Today everything is hosted on servers in the European Union, with encrypted nightly backups. We're honest about what that does and doesn't mean — see the privacy policy for the plain-language version. Choosing your own region is on the roadmap.
